cooking classes

Rossi loves cooking, and she also knows how to teach with her 20+ years of experience teaching English. The recipes are simple when you have an experienced hand to guide you through the process of creating delicious food. And what better way to taste Bulgaria!

Retreats and Team building

MAKAK is an oasis, and easily turns into a safe space for reflection, sharing and healing. Our facilitators, the peer learning, the mindfulness practices and the wellness and creative workshops are all designed to help the participants recharge.

Art and jewellery workshops

With many artists and three local ceramic jewellery studios in our own village, MAKAK is a perfect location, whether you crave for an artistic outlet for your energy or just want to have fun and make a unique bead necklace.

Neolithic ceramic workshop

Working with clay is always fun, but making your own piece of pottery or ceramic ornament, and firing it also yourself, until the finished piece looks like it was created centuries ago, is even more exciting. You can have a chance to create your copy of a Neolithic artefacts, found close to MAKAK.

Fossil hunting

Fossil hunting brings you back to when you were a child. Hunting for these millions of years old, ancient treasures in the Yantra river on a hot summer day is the best experience when you are dreaming of escaping to nature and Never-Neverland.

The area on both banks of the beautiful Yantra river that flows just 50 meters from MAKAK is almost untouched. There are old big trees and bushes on its banks, and  small islands in the middle of the river, which make it the perfect habitat for all kinds of birds from the big gorgeous Pheasant to the mesmerising Kingfisher.

Guided tour of Ledenik

Only 5 km separate the city and the village but the architecture is different and diverse. You can see the old church, the inn and the water mill and also visit the famous medieval Shemshi bei tower house which inspired Le Corbusier, the father of modern architecture.

Guided visits to art and craft studios

There are three ceramics studios and one woodcarving workshop in Ledenik. The artists and artisans who work there are among of the best in their field, and visiting their studios and listening to their talks is inspiring. You can learn about carving church alters, making delicate ceramic jewelry and artisan ceramic tiles.

Guided visit to a mushroom farm

The only mushroom farm specialized in the production of medicinal mushroom spawn of shitake, Maitake, Reishi and many other varieties is in Ledenik. You can learn how to grow these super foods at home and what their properties are. 

Veliko Tarnovo sightseeing

This romantic city is the old capital of Bulgaria, and the winding Yantra river makes it spectacularly picturesque. It creates a fantasy- like canyon with beautiful Revival houses, situated on its high cliffs and hills. The medieval castle ruins and the numerous churches create a stunning atmosphere day and night.

Monasteries and churches

The area within 30 km of Veliko Tarnovo is dotted with historical sites. A big part of them are major monasteries and churches which showcase the unique architectural style of Nikola Fichev (Kolio Ficheto) and murals painted by the leading Bulgarian revival artist Zachary Zograf. 

Roman ruins and festivals

People say that you just have to look down when you are walking through the woods to spot an ancient coin after a rainy day. The ceramic centre near the city of Pavlikeni, Nikopolis ad Istrum and Novae are just a few of the landmarks left from the Romans, that you can visit for a day. They also host yearly Roman festivals.

Waterfalls and Caves

Just a half hour car trip takes you to the Hotnitsa waterfall which will mesmerize you with its turquoise waters. Drive over the hills opposite MAKAK, and enjoy the coolness of the Bacho Kiro cave on a hot summer day. The famous Devetashka cave and Krushuna waterfalls can also be visited in one day.

Eco paths and canyons

Taking a trip in the area within 30 km of MAKAK you can enjoy a nature walk along the Emen canyon and eco path, the Hotnitsa waterfalls and eco path, the Dryanovo monastery and eco path and Preobrajenski monastery eco path. These are just a few of the routes you can choose from.

BIKE tours around

It is surprising how close we are to the fascinating vistas of the majestic Balkan mountain. They are best experienced on a bike. The roads are connecting scarcely populated beautiful old villages, and there is little traffic to spoil your ride. And most of the previously mentioned tourist sites can be reached by bike.
